Densifiers

Lithium and sodium silicate concrete densifiers and hardeners that increase surface hardness, abrasion resistance, and dustproofing for polished and unpolished concrete.

Densifiers

Concrete densifiers are reactive liquid silicate solutions that penetrate into the concrete slab and chemically react with free calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate hydrate (CSH). This reaction permanently hardens the surface, increases abrasion resistance, and reduces dusting. HTS Chemical manufactures five concrete densifier formulations: CD-HS (high-solids blended silicate), CD-HSL (low-solids blended silicate for green concrete and curing compound replacement), CD-LS (lithium silicate with fast reactivity and minimal residue), CD-LS 1L (a high-solids lithium silicate formulated specifically for 1L concrete), and CD-SS (sodium silicate with deep penetration at an economical price point). All are VOC compliant at less than 50 g/L and qualify for LEED IEQ Credit 4.1.

Beyond hardening and dust-proofing, concrete densifiers play a key role in reducing efflorescence, the white mineral deposits that form when moisture migrates through untreated concrete. By filling the capillary pore structure with CSH, densifiers limit moisture movement and the transport of soluble salts to the surface. For existing efflorescence issues, the slab should be cleaned with an efflorescence cleaner prior to densifier application to ensure proper penetration and reactivity.

CD-LS is the preferred choice for polished concrete programs. It reacts quickly, leaves virtually no residue, and does not require rinsing or scrubbing after application. CD-LS 1L is a high-solids version of CD-LS engineered for 1L concrete, delivering a higher concentration of reactive lithium silicate where standard formulations may not achieve full penetration and reactivity. CD-HS provides a high-solids blended silicate formula that maximizes the amount of reactive material delivered into the slab. CD-HSL is specifically formulated for use on green (freshly placed) concrete and as a curing compound replacement — it can be applied immediately after finishing and maintains breathability in the slab. CD-SS is a deep-penetrating sodium silicate densifier that provides excellent hardening at an economical price point. Note that sodium silicate products may leave a white residue on the surface if over-applied, so excess material must be removed before it dries.

When in doubt, consider the end use of the floor. If the slab will be ground and polished, lithium-based densifiers are the standard. If the goal is simply to harden and dust-proof a utilitarian floor, sodium or blended silicate formulas deliver excellent results at a lower material cost. All HTS densifiers are water-based, zero-VOC or ultra-low-VOC, and safe for use in occupied buildings.

Concrete densifiers are used in virtually every industry that has concrete floors. Warehouses and distribution centers rely on concrete hardeners to reduce dusting and improve abrasion resistance under constant forklift traffic. Manufacturing plants use densifiers to create floors that resist chemical spills and heavy point loads. Retail stores, schools, hospitals, and office buildings use densified and polished concrete as a low-maintenance, high-performance alternative to VCT, carpet, and other traditional flooring materials.

In the food and beverage industry, densifiers are used to create floors that meet USDA and FDA sanitation requirements without the use of topical coatings that can harbor bacteria in chips and delaminations. In cold storage and freezer facilities, densifiers and concrete curing compounds help prevent surface scaling caused by freeze-thaw cycles. Parking structures, aircraft hangars, and other exterior or semi-exterior applications also benefit from the efflorescence reduction and surface hardening that densifiers provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

A densifier penetrates into the slab and chemically reacts to form CSH, permanently hardening the concrete from within. A sealer sits on or near the surface and provides a protective barrier against staining, moisture, and chemical exposure. Many projects benefit from both. Densify first for hardness and dust-proofing, then seal for stain protection.
CD-HSL is specifically formulated for use as a curing aid on green concrete. It retains moisture in the slab during the curing period while simultaneously beginning the densification process, effectively serving as a concrete curing compound and densifier in one step. For mature concrete, standard densifiers like CD-HS or CD-LS are the better choice.
All HTS densifiers are VOC compliant and contribute to healthier indoor air quality. They are commonly used in food processing, pharmaceutical, and healthcare facilities.
Apply densifier until the surface stops absorbing material. Typically one to two applications are sufficient. Remove any excess material before it dries to prevent surface residue, particularly with sodium silicate (CD-SS).
